Why are dreams important? Why do we need them?
Dreams are vital for everyone’s life as they carry inspiration and motivation. They drive us into a certain direction and help us focus on what is important in life.
If we don’t know where we are going, how are we going to get there?
As adults, we dream about the small things – dinner, our next holiday, what bag or shoes we can buy next…We struggle with dreaming up the BIG things … like relationships, our dream job, money and personal growth.
This blog post is about helping us to start dreaming BIG again – dreaming about things that excite us, delight us and ignite us.
How many of you would like to wake up excited, delighted and ignited?
It’s something adults have forgotten how to do, how to wake up happy and take each moment as an unfolding adventure.
We could do it as children.
I sat watching my children play the other day – and move between rooms. They didn’t walk the way we do all slouchy and grumpy.
Why don’t we move through our day in the same way?
Because society has taught us that life is hard – go to school, get a job, pay bills and die. Geez, no wonder the majority of adults are miserable. But the truth is that our young, happy, joyful child is still within us and all those emotions are still accessible … it is never too late to start living.
I had to lift my youngest and two friends on a school outing the other morning and they suddenly started asking each other what they want to be when they grow up.
I sat silently, trying not to disturb and pretend I wasn’t there so I could hear this completely natural conversation between three 9 year old boys.
Caleb: “Well, I want to make cars – like ferrari’s – but I won’t call them ferrari’s – they will be called Watsonmobiles” (his surname is Watson).
My son declares that he either wants to be an artist or a famous soccer player.
And Joe says he wants to make people laugh … like he does now in class (yes, he is the class clown).
Now, I know all three boys and it struck me how suited they are to their dreams.
Daniel loves drawing – he has a talent, and I hope that he follows his dream of becoming an artist.
Caleb loves Lego – building things up and breaking them down – making cars – yup, I can see it.
Joe is a clown.
So, why is it so easy for kids to dream?
Because they are connected to their inner wisdom. They know who they are and they know what they want. Simple.
We need to connect with our inner child. We need to go back and reconnect with our 5 year old self and get in touch with our dreams.
“For what it’s worth, it’s never too late to be whoever you want to be. I hope you live a life you’re proud of, and if you find that you’re not I hope you have the strength to start over. – Scott Fitzgerald
I truly hope that you will get in touch with your dreams and follow them until they are true.
Onwards and upwards!
