How to stay focused on your business when the sh*t hits the fan
I’m not going to lie – I know what it feels like to have your life crumbling around you.
The first time was in my relationship – one minute it was there, and the next minute it wasn’t and we were heading for divorce.
I felt alone, disillusioned, shocked, heartbroken and lost.
The second time was in my business – from making heaps of money quickly and easily to having 0.00 in my bank account and knowing that debit orders are going to bounce.
I felt like I a failure and a fraud and the anxiety, disappointment and stress were palpable.
In those moments, when the shit is hitting the fan and your world is falling apart, the words “this too shall pass” and “all hardships are gifts” come at you, but you aren’t able to accept them. You intellectualize it, you “know it to be true” but for F sake, right now, life is HARD.
And, on top of it all, you have to stay focused and continue to grow your business.
I know, for me, when my world was falling apart, focusing in on my business was near impossible.
I just wanted to dive under the covers and never come out.
So, what did I do?
Pretty much that … I retreated, I cried, I allowed the pain, sadness and disappointment to flow through me.
Could I work?
And what happened?
My business suffered. I stepped out of it, and naturally, with no driving force behind it, it slowed down and dwindled.
It took time for me to come back to myself and come back to my business.
And yes, when I came back, I was a different person, with renewed energy and fresh focus but I had to pick up from where I left off, I had to rekindle the embers of my business and it each time, it can feel like I’m starting all over.
This is the life of an entrepreneur. There is no set monthly salary that we can rely on. We have to make it happen. We are responsible for our own magic.
And that’s a beautiful thing because I do believe that the sky is the limit, but it’s also damn scary.
Because what I have realized, is that the shit seems to hit the fan quite often. Life is not always a bed of roses. Life has a way of taking me on twists, turns, ups, downs and inside outs.
Life changes. Constantly.
And being in my own business, I need to bring my business along for the ride.
I have discovered that if I let go, and flow with it, there are still ups and downs, but they are gentler, easier and even fun.
I have also discovered that there are certain pegs that I can put in place so that when life gives me lemons, my business continues to run.
So, what are these pegs?
The first time I felt like my world was falling apart, I did not have the gift of clarity in my business. And so, it was that much harder to keep it together. Not having clarity means not having a clear vision, and if you don’t know where you are going, how can you ever get there?
The second time I went through a traumatic time, I was super clear on my business and I was able to continue marketing it, simply because I knew my message, my purpose and my gift. Clarity is a gift.
Growing and nurturing your business from clarity is the only way to go.
So, even if your life is on the up and up, I urge you to get clear on your business now … you will be that much stronger when you receive one of life’s unexpected knocks. This right is here is one of the reasons I start off the Brand Your Dream package with getting clear and dreaming up your business vision.
It’s also why I offer the Brand Clarity Coaching package. I know from experience that the CLARITY IS A GIFT, and non-negotiable in business. If I could wave a magic wand, and grant all business owners one gift, it would be the gift of clarity. Clarity comes from getting in touch with who you are and allowing ideas and inspiration to bubble to the surface. It’s getting in touch with your divine spark. And trust me, it’s inside of you, waiting to ignite!
No, you don’t have to turn into a robot, and you don’t have to lose the magic of connecting in with a client, but there are ways to make the process of lead generation and client on-boarding easy but still personal.
It takes a bit of planning, yes, but once it is set up, you don’t have to be IN your business all the time. This gives you the freedom to either work ON your business or to lay low when you are going through a tough time emotionally.
Bottom line is that you have to look after YOU. You come first. It is impossible for you to be 100% focused on your business all the time. You are only human.
And with technology advancing as quickly as it has, it doesn’t have to be costly or complicated to get online and create an automated lead generation process. If you can’t invest in a full website just yet, we also offer a simple but effective online package.
I know for me, automating my coaching sessions has been not only a time-saver but an energy saver. I plan when I want meetings and the bookings happen automatically. There’s no back and forth, no phone calls, no emails … it just happens. So, if I’m having a LOW day, I can take the day off knowing that the business will keep flowing.
Before you run away from the dreaded thought of creating content…. eeeekkkk… it’s not that bad, I promise. The key is to create the content now, before the shit hits the fan.
Create content when you are inspired. In fact, I have a whole blog on this which you can find here.
And then, when your life throws you a curve ball, what do you do? You fall back on this content. You re-use it. You re-purpose it. You allow it to keep your online presence going, without the energy of putting yourself out there, when all you want to do is hide away.
So darling people, I don’t mean to be all doom and gloom, and even though I am a dreamer at heart, I have learnt that being practical is important too.
Life is an adventure, and every good adventure needs a bit of suspense, a bit of action, a bit of drama along with a bit of love and a bit of fun. It’s never going to be plain sailing all the way.
Yes, I believe in magic. I believe we all have the power to create meaningful lives and live out the full expression of who we are. I believe in infinite abundance. I believe in the power of dreams.
But I also believe in life, in the good and the bad, in the ups and the downs, in the sadness and the sunshine, in the tears and the laughter, in the magic and the practical.
So, let’s get practical in order for the magic to keep flowing, while we navigate this beautiful thing called life.
Yours in #BigBizLove
